Abstract

What is "good to eat" is a central theme of discussion in the history of anthropology and it brings considerations that might be considered extremely "good to think". The classification of an edible food goes throughout power relations, questions of hygiene, health issues, habitus, legislation, tabu and class relationships. Therefore, this project aims to comprehend the pathway of the rotten as a classification. Having as a starting point its signification in a consumer and market location until it is disposed and possibly reutilized, the rotten food is classified in different ways, throughout different spheres, creating in this relation discourses that become rules and social practices.Through the inspiration of classical anthropological work that would discuss the issue of the rotten as a hazy definition in an intimate relation with science and culture, this project intends to question and discuss given categories from food anthropology and thus, think new contemporary concepts to debate a classical question, which cross over themes such as classification, exclusion, legislation, food security and biosociability. Though, it is aimed to develop a multi-situated ethnography of the rotten classification, through its pathways in two different fields: an open market at the "favela de Paraisópolis" and the headmaster of "Mesa Brasil's" project.
