Abstract

Governments considered as "populist" gained a strong inner connotation since oligarchic governments succumbed and new government models were instituted, which brought many consequences for the political, social, and economic conditions in Brazil and Argentina in the middle of the last century. This topic has been studied mainly by political sociologists, in order to understand how these heads of state managed to be so long in power and implement numerous changes that marked these countries historically so that we can still perceive much of their effects. This project proposes to study the populism that lasted South America focused on two countries, Brazil and Argentina in which this phenomenon had a great political dimension, especially in the governments of Getúlio Vargas (periods 1937-1945 and 1951-1954) and Juan Domingo Perón (1946-1955 and 1973-1974), from a literature perspective formed by classical scholars of the subject, especially Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Enzo Faletto, Octavio Ianni, Francis Weffort, Gino Germani, Miguel, and Juan Carlos Murmis Portantiero. First, it will be made an analysis of the populism concept, the variables, characteristics, and representativeness in the countries it highlighted, as it appears in the works of these authors, in a second step, to evaluate the possibility of establishing correlations between these authors' interpretations of the populism phenomenon, highlighting individual and more important cases of "Varguismo" and "Peronismo".(AU)
