Abstract

This research project seeks to analyze the territorialization of Brazilian agribusiness in Mozambique. Recently, the Mozambican government has offered up for lease vast tracts of land to international agribusinesses, initiating a surge in the establishment of foreign-owned production operations in the country. The government of Mozambique has prioritized Brazilian agribusiness in this process, seeing the application of Brazil's agricultural experience and technology as vital to the future success of the country's plans to modernize and industrialize its own agricultural sector. The agro-industrial model of rural development being adopted by Mozambique is generating socio-territorial impacts and is resulting in dramatic changes to the agrarian question in the country. This project will analyze the agrarian question in Mozambique, considering the expansion of international agribusiness, as well as the transformation of rural territories, processes of rural territorial development, worker's rights and relations and the concentration of land ownership, particularly as they relate to the implementation of Brazilian agricultural projects in the country. This work will demonstrate the impacts of Brazilian-led agriculture projects in peasant territories in Mozambique and highlight the ways in which these projects are affecting the country's rural population and small-scale family farming sector.
