Abstract

Cosmic rays are high energies charged particles, mostly protons, which arrive our planet from all directions. Its flux has temporal and spatial variations related to space weather phenomena such as solar, interplanetary and geomagnetic phenomena that can influence the performance and/or reliability of technological systems on the space or on the Earth's surface. The passage of interplanetary structures, such as ICMEs (Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections), may generate geomagnetic storms which are related to a significant set of the space weather effects. In this way, forecasting the occurrence of these storms is extremely important for the current and future use space based technologies. Studies of geomagnetic storms forecasting using cosmic ray particles incident on the Earth's surface started in the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century. The presence of interplanetary structures can produce signatures in the cosmic ray flux observed some hours prior to the arrival of the structure to the Earth. This work aims to analyze this variations using data from the Global Muon Detector Network. The objective is to improve the methodologies used in previous works, specially on the correction of data for the temperature effect and on a continuous analysis both in periods with and without geomagnetic storms.
