Abstract

B chromosomes have been identified in several groups of eukaryotes and are traditionally considered as accessory elements that do not influence the phenotype of their hosts, so they are dispensable. However, this vision has been changed because some recent works suggest possible transcriptional activity of these chromosomes and possible advantage to the host organism. Cichlid fishes have been used with model in genetic and genomic studies and the accumulation of information has provided important contributions in the knowledge of structure and genomic evolution. The cichlid Astatotilapia latifasciata became target of investigations about the possible biological effect of B chromosomes via studies involving structural and functional genomics. However, studies on epigenetic modifications of the chromatin and its interaction with specific factors, which interfere in the genic expression, still need to be conducted. A significant way of focus in epigenomic analyzes is the use of antibodies that recognize proteins or protein modifications present in the chromatin (immunocytogenetics). The present project have the aim to advance in understanding the possible effects of B chromosome presence in the organisms, based in the specific epigenetics patterns of this chromosome using A. latifasciata as a model and immunocytogenetic tools.
