Abstract

This project aims to analyze the federal policy of preserving cultural heritage in Brazil between the years 1975 to 1989. The period in question is characterized by an institutional reform that abolished the then Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), creating in its place the Department of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (SPHAN) and the National Pro-Memory Foundation (FNPM). It is the action of these two new bodies that will be looking to assess whether, whatever the historical memory of the period, such institutional reform initiated a moment of modernization in the practice of cultural preservation in the country.
