Abstract

On the emerging processes of individualization, stands out the notion of sub-politics, which means, among other things, that privacy has become the lowest conceivable unit of the politics, which opens new possibilities for political action and also new obstacles. However, the ideology of the "new spirit of capitalism" (BOLTANSKI; CHIAPELLO, 2009), which hosts contemporary hegemonic sociability, is excessively privatized and instrumental and, as a result, it difficults the political concerted action. Among these changes there is, since the 1990s, the emergence of a "new paradigm of violence" (WIEVIORKA, 1997, 2003), which is characterized by the outbreak of acts of intolerance motivated by identity, whose origin is above or below political processes. Through this approach that conceives violence as an issue of politics, we found the heuristic key that make possible to demonstrate that isolation takes on new and profound proportions in the contemporary social structure. More than that, through the evidence that there are distinct types of isolated people in Brazil and the United States, it can be seen, despite the simultaneity of this phenomenon in both societies, that its peculiarities are associated with the specific content to each national citizenship. It is possible to say that, in Brazil, there is a predominance of infrapolitical violence, while in the United States, there is an intensification of forms of metapolitical violence. Thus, the key variables to this study, which will make it possible to compare countries, are the violence and the different contents and limits of citizenship in Brazil and the United States.
