Ponds with floating macrophytes, especially the family Lemnaceae sp., known as duckweeds, has been successfully used for polishing wastewater, creating a biomass with high protein value. Plants use the nutrients (N and P) present in the wastewater for their growth and to store them in tissue. This biomass with high added value can be promisingly used for bioenergy production. Thus, a sewage treatment plant can work in an integrated and sustainable: duckweeds can be grown concurrently with the treatment of sewage, in a simple, economical and based on natural processes. This research project intends to implement in the sewage treatment of Ilha Solteira, SP, a unit of polishing wastewater using duckweeds. We wish to verify that the proposed system is efficient for the removal of nutrients, suspended solids and even organic matter and pathogens as well as being effective for growing lemnáceas and cost effective.
