Abstract

The aim of the thesis to be developed in the Program of Human Geography, University of Sao Paulo, will see if the vidalian geographic method was applied in Brazil after having been originated in studies of Vidal de la Blache on the Mediterranean. Then, this work seeks to know how this was done. Through the analysis of institutional, intellectual and theoretical history of Pierre Monbeig and the historical context in which it was inserted, this work seeks to unravel how the history of the vidalian method was moved the center of civilization (the Mediterranean) for "the continent". Pierre Monbeig can be a laboratory of this methodology transition, since this geographer published numerous articles about Spain at the beginning of his doctorate, which began on the subject of Spanish Balearic region, leaving this work at an advanced stage and then devote himself to Brazil. The method used on this work will focus on theoretical study of ruptures and continuities in relation to the Vidalian base and social factors that influences his theory (Pierre Monbeig). So, we build a social history of the ideas of Pierre Monbeig, where what is important is the dialectic between tradition and rupture in the transition from Mediterranean method to the method associated with the Brazilian particularities.
