Abstract

The concepts of quality in education are complex and polysemic, and should be investigated in relation to historic changes in the supply of public education in Brazil. In this sense, educational indicators play an important role in assisting the perception of temporal changes and allowing certain types of comparison between scenarios. On the other hand, indicators portray only a few aspects of reality; therefore, its use reflects political and ideological positions that mediate disputes between different concepts of education and the various social projects about improving public education in Brazil. The main purpose of this research is to further investigate the extent of educational processes - primarily the role of educational indicators in the debate about the quality of basic education -, in order to advance the construction of quality standards releated to a broader conception of education that shall be guaranteed in the provision of public education in Brazil.
