Abstract Assuming that the public policies for the Brazilian cultural heritage preservation opted for safeguarding certain representations of the urban space to the detriment of others, this research is mainly intended to bring to light the memory that National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional IPHAN) has been defending, with an aim at understanding what is that urban (from the critical urban geography viewpoint) considered to be of relevance to be part of the mosaic by which it intends to form the national identity. To achieve this goal we started from the analytical model proposed by Lefebvre (1999) to understand the process of urbanization, the political, commercial and industrial city, respectively represented in this project by the case studies of Iguape/State of São Paulo, Oeiras/State of Piauí and Cataguases/State of Minas Gerais. This proposal is part of the need for evaluation of a policy established in Brazil in 1935 upon the elevation of the city of Ouro Preto/State of Minas Gerais to the category of National Monument, which meant the choice of a particular architecture that associated the national memory to splendid colonial cities of Minas Gerais, thereby depreciating the place of other States in the mosaic that would become the national memory and identity. | |
