Abstract

The research proposes to constitute a theoretical-methodological and instrumental body to discuss the preservation of production landscapes inserted in metropolitan territories. In previous research, medium and small cities in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC) were studied, formed from structuring vectors of occupation, such as rivers, roads, and railways. From the results, a new perspective was opened for the joint approach to industrial-railway heritage and other cultural references in cities located in metropolitan contexts. Focusing on the historic site of Paranapiacaba, listed by IPHAN (today a district of Santo André), in the southeast sub-region of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP), the hypothesis is that the city, which emerged along the vector formed by suburbs-station of the São Paulo Railway Company, formed cultural territories that demand an interscalar and diachronic approach that makes it possible to overcome their condition of a regional enclave, involving a circuit of localities, heritage and communities aligned by their daily relationships and identity. The aim is to improve methodologies of the population's apprehension and perception of these territories and heritage - which involve different areas, such as urban, peri-urban, and rural - and the construction of knowledge-sharing and co-management tools that can support preservation policies at local, regional levels and at the same time enable their recognition at a global level. It is expected to identify and understand the relationship between active and deactivated railway-industrial assets and the cultural references that have meaning for the region's residents and involving social groups little covered by traditional preservation practices.
