Abstract

This research proposal is linked to the Postdoctoral Project "Black Urban Territories in the Post-Abolition: Spaces, Memories and Resistances in the Interior of São Paulo", developed by our advisor in the Postdoctoral program of the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism at USP - IAU / USP, whose main objective is to map urban black territories that emerged in the context of post-abolition in the interior of São Paulo, as a form of resistance to urban laws and urban projects that promoted the spatial segregation of the city's poor, notably blacks more specifically.We emphasize that in order to understand the constitution and maintenance of urban black territories in this region, it has been essential to consider the political, economic, social, ideological and cultural context, perceived from the perspective that the formation of the bases that triggered this process, especially bases of an ideological nature , were sustain by the coffee economy in the 19th century associated with the intense use of slave labor.It is also worth mentioning that in recent decades, interest from universities and research centers has grown around the theme of black or afro-Brazilian culture, highlighting their knowledge, practices, experiences, contributions in the field of architecture and urbanism, their confrontations and social demands. This stance, in addition to contributing to the preservation of this important Brazilian Cultural Heritage, has been corroborating the implementation and development of cultural public policies, but also of health, education, housing, sanitation, urban planning, among others, justifying the expansion of these researches as a fundamental contribution to the planning and ordering of cities that include the diversity of their subjects and territories.Anchored in these prerogatives, we propose in the present scientific initiation project the mapping of the black presence and its territories in the municipality of Americana-SP, contributing to the development of a plural look at this city. Thus, based on the concepts of race and space, we aim to map, in continuous and participative dialogue with the subjects inserted there, the stories, knowledge, cultural practices and the ways in which these subjects appropriate the urban territory. To this end, we will share concepts and theoretical approaches around the consolidation of black protagonism throughout history in the period of slavery, as well as in the Post-Abolition period, and around the formulations of space, territory and Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage.
