Abstract

This setup process of setting urban cores of former slaves, and as a case study the city of São Carlos, São Paulo State, from four neighborhoods emerged contemporaneously with the abolition, with large black presence. Are neighborhoods Vila Isabel Vila Nery, Vila Purity and Botafogo. The historiography of the slaves in the post-abolition of Brazil is becoming less rare, however it is still hazy knowledge of the ways in which the black organized their lives after release. Through the analysis of an adequate bibliography of archival work, field research and the significant resources that oral history offers, it is possible to investigate ways of living of former slaves in the city, as opposed to what they were used in the space of farms cafe Paulista West. The research aims also to understand how the cultural heritage of black influence your environment, considering material and immaterial aspects. With these objectives, the work unfolds in two parts: the first deals with the relationship between neighborhoods and urban space in which they fall, as well as the spatial relationships between housing and other facilities within individual nuclei, the second part analyzes the housing, noting the occupation of the lot, the internal distribution of environments, the use and representation of each space and the changes occurring over time. Visa, ultimately, contribute to broaden the historiography of the black in our country, from a perspective that considers active and active in this process.
