Abstract

This project aims to study the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro in the period between 1890 and 1909, during the administration of the naturalist João Barbosa Rodrigues, in order to explore the inclusion of this scientific institution, producer of botanical knowledge, in the biopolitical debate occurred in the early years of the republic. It is, therefore, to seek the set of representations conveyed by the botanical collection, which focuses on composition, in those years, was set mainly in Amazonian flora, which demonstrates the definition of national flora, and the ways in which these representations inform, at the same time they are informed, by the construction of national images in the nascent republic. Therefore, the research is set to investigate, on the one hand, the institutional trajectory of the Botanical Garden during this period, referenced to the intellectual trajectory and scientific project of its director, João Barbosa Rodrigues. On the other hand, seek the connection of that political context to the network of meanings placed by the reconfiguration of the botanical collection period, whose emphasis, as said, was in the Amazon rainforest.
