Abstract

The present dissertation intends to accomplish a study of Rio de Janeiro¿s Botanical Garden during the management of the naturalist João Barbosa Rodrigues, between 1890 and 1909. Its main goal is to determine the set of representations about the flora conveyed by the institution through the display of a botanical collection whose composition revealed intellectual conflicts (exotic flora versus indigenous flora and botanical knowledge versus profitable knowledge). It is also an objective of this dissertation to compare the legal treatment destined to gardens and local forests and, in the city center, between gardens and street. The different perceptions of trees in the period will be relevant because it demonstrates both the hygienic design and urban occupation of the State as well as the population's resistance to restrictions of public space (AU)
