Abstract

The São Paulo Marsh Antwren (Formicivora aff. acutirostris) is an endemic species of São Paulo State (Brazil) that was recently described in the metropolitan region of São Paulo city. It occurs in natural marsh wetlands and, specially due to its habitat destruction (a fact that is correlated to hydroelectric dam constructions, forest fire and exotic species introduction), it is already considered as "critically endangered" in the São Paulo State Red Book of endangered species. One conservation approach to this species refers to genetic analyses in order to establish a monitoring and management program of their populations. Among several molecular markers commonly used to evaluate genetic diversity, microsatellites are extremely informative. Therefore, one goal of this project is the isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers for F. aff. acutirostris. In order to isolate a sufficient number of loci using a next generation sequencer, this proposal intends the development of collaborative activities with a North American institution. This approach could lead to further data on population analyses in order to support the species conservation. (AU)
