Abstract

Among the most exploited shark by fishing, pelagic species have a greater complexity in the evaluation and monitoring of their populations due to their large distributions in geographical areas. The whitetip shark Carcharhinus longimanus, with circunglobal occurrence is between the main species with strong explotation and population depletion signs. However, evaluations that facilitate the management proper of fisheries are still inconsistent. In this respect, studies of the genetic population structure of fish have contributed to the elucidation of issues such as genetic variability, geographic distribution, migration patterns, breeding stock, taxonomy, systematics and historical events. These aspects are particularly relevant to the fishing industry by providing subsidies for management and conservation. Considering the urgent need for sustainable fisheries, hampered mainly by information lack, this study will seek to develop molecular markers for characterization of microsatellite polymorphisms in the species C. longimanus using second generation sequencing technologies.
