Abstract

Given the increase in problems related to water conditions, both with respect to quantity and quality, there is urgent not only to control water pollution and diffuse spot (this is the one distributed over the soil surface by numerous pollutants) but also to know the reason of this pollution. The objective of this project is to characterize the use and occupation of land in the region Basin Monjolinho through the use of satellite images of the region and with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Thus, is sought to open the possibility to evaluate the influence of occupation on the watershed, both in matters of quantity (peak flow) as well as the question of the quality of the water (presence of pollutants). It is expected to find that soil sealing generates a number of significant impacts on the drainage area of influence, as well as drastic consequences on runoff, among other factors. Therefore, a major challenge for the planner is to anticipate and manage the impacts before they become reality. Thus, it is critical to conduct studies that provide diagnoses, especially in basins undergoing urbanization, as is the case in some areas of the Basin Stream Monjolinho in Sao Carlos, Brazil. (AU)
