Abstract

AbstractThe magical signs, by their ancestrally, accumulate knowledge and mysteries. The permanence of these signs at the image circuit has incorporated through time an expressive visual code system, which almost always circulate at a non-official way, in its production flow and cultural consumerism. The interest of this work is to think about the dynamic that move the signs - triangles, squares, circles, stars, crosses etc - that are present in popular magic books and that also appear in Brazilian artistic vanguard movements to today. Artist Raul Córdula says that "every existing form have a magical meaning" [1], opening perspectives to the approach of the theme of reformulated "knowledge", both in the contemporary cultural ambiance repertoires and in Córdula's constructivist work itself. This works aims to check how the succession of these signs stays in time and space, considering the concept of the culture of edges [2] formulated by Jerusa Pires Ferreira, as well the gesture and representation in its symbolic goal, as rites that reconfigure in successive ways. We reflect about impasses and implications that include the idea of edge, marginality, peripheral culture in transit, that guides such knowledge in contemporary times. We question: in which way these signs of popular magic, which production and consumerism are usually linked to mass circulation, reflect in the symbolic portrayal, space and gesture of contemporary art.
