Abstract

Many of stingless bees have had their populations decimated and greatly reduced due to anthropogenic deforestation, exploitation and inadequate management. The reduction and fragmentation of habitat reflect negatively on natural populations, resulting in the loss of genetic variability due to the reduction in population size. Factors like haplodiploidy, the complementary sex determination (CSD) and eussociality associated with swarming, genetics affect bee populations by restricting gene flow breast, making highly viscous populations. Partamona rustica, the species under study, is a social stingless bee tribe Meliponini occurring in Brazil in the savanna regions of northern Minas Gerais and Bahia southwest. This group of bees has habit of nesting in arboreal termite external assets, and gables of human habitation and that like other bees are important pollinators. Given these factors and the absence of studies to species, this study will aim to test the hypothesis that populations of P. rustica exhibit genetic structuring in sampling sites due to colonization of sites by a small number of maternal lineages and limited interpopulation gene flow due to a limited range of flight of males. Be used for both mitochondrial and microsatellite markers. They will also analyze some ecological aspects of P. rustica, in order to know which species of termites are used for nesting and plants which are visited by these bees. This assessment can help to estimate the risk of populations facing environmental changes and to devise strategies for their conservation. (AU)
