Abstract

Concretes with low Portland cement content are justified by technical reasons (lower hydration heat, shrinkage and cracking) and sustainability (lower consumption of energy and raw materials, CO2 emissions and transport requests). The formulation of these concretes is based on particle packing and dispersion concepts, use of mineral additions and fillers and appropriate material choice. Thus it is possible to deliver 1 MPa of compressive strength with less than 5 kg/m3 of binders. Variability in raw materials, in environmental conditions and in the production process results in variability of various fresh and hardened properties. The feasibility of applying concrete at large scale depends on its sensitivity in this variable scenario. Concrete with adequate robustness, i.e. sufficiently tolerant to variations, are desirable. This research aims to evaluate the robustness of concrete with low cement content, focusing primarily on deviations in proportioning and on grading and morphological variability of aggregates. Incremental fractional factorial designs will be applied to analyze the influence of different factors that affect the properties of concrete. Based on these results it is intended to obtain information on how to increase robustness, making concrete with low cement content safe for use on site.
