Abstract

Bothrops sp. snake venoms cause an extensive local damage such as pain, edema, hemorrhage and necrosis, associated with systemic damage as coagulopathies systemic hemorrhage and renal failure. In Brazil, these cases are treated with serotherapy by commercial bothropic antivenom that consists in antivenom obtained by horse hyperimmunization with Bothrops snake venoms. Although not present this pool, other Bothrops sp. may have its effects neutralized because of cross-reaction between antivenoms and venoms. The Size-Exclusion High Performance Liquid has been used for venom:antivenom affinity analysis by mathematical modulation of the elution profile. This technique informs us about the relative venom:antivenom complexes molecular mass, the magnitude of components reactivity, affinity, valence and reactions stoichiometry. The venom:antivenom affinity analysis allows a greater understanding of the antivenoms effectiveness mechanisms. Considering these facts, the aims of this project is quantify the Rinocerophis (Bothrops) fonsecai venom: commercial and specific antivenom interactions. (AU)
