Abstract

Given the fast aging of the world population, especially in developing countries, and its contribution to increase the relevance of chronic diseases, understanding the risk behaviors that contribute to increase disability and mortality in this age group is critical to develop interventions that promote healthy aging and extending the number of years lived and those lived without disability. This study aims to understand the relationship between concordant or not concordant behavior (alcohol consumption, smoking and exercise) of elderly couples (65 years old and more) and their relationship with the presence of chronic diseases (heart attack, angina, hypertension, diabetes and stroke - stroke) in those couples. Methods: It will be done a secondary analysis of the original study 10/66 Dementia Research Group, in which data were collected from a household interview of all seniors above 65 years old from geographically defined areas of 6 low and middle income countries (Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela) with sample of approximately 12,000 individuals. It will be used data related to physical and mental health (angina, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, stroke and depression) and health behaviors (physical activity and alcohol and tobacco consumption). Through analysis of prevalence and logistic regression, it will be investigated the concordance relationship between health behaviors and physical and mental health conditions in older couples. This same concordance relationship will also be analyzed between unmarried couples, and it will be investigated whether socioeconomic and cultural factors affect the concordance. (AU)
