Abstract

The possible shortage of crude oil and the unpredictable increase in its prices have led to an impressive expansion of initiatives in the last decades dedicated to the search of alternative sources of chemicals and polymers. Thus, in view of the wide availability of vegetable and animal biomass and the number of excellent features offered from it, this project aims to use levulinic and itaconic acids, both easily obtained from plant biomass, as feedstock for the production of monomers and polymers. This project is directly related to the postdoctoral project currently developed in Brazil, since the macromonomers obtained from vegetable oils will be, at a later stage, associated with polymers derived from levulinic and itaconic acids by polycondensation and crosslinking reactions. The project described herein will be developed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), in the laboratory headed by Prof. Dr. Michael A. R. Meier, a researcher of worldwide notoriety in the development of new polymers from renewable resources. Monomers and polymers will be obtained from methods in which Prof. Meier has extensive experience, and characterized by the convenient techniques. It is important to emphasize that levulinic has never been studied with this approach, enabling the development of original materials with interesting applications. (AU)
