Abstract Interest in polymers from renewable resources is growing vigorously, as part of the generalconcern for sustainability. Additionally, the advent of click chemistry has attracted considerable attention in a wide range of synthetic domains, mainly due to its green chemistry connotation and versatility. In the context of polymer science, two types of applications stand out in terms of useful approaches, i.e., (i) irreversible structural modifications, and (ii) the reversible Diels-Alder(DA/rDA) adduct formation, which opened the way to the preparation of novel materials bearingmendable, recyclable and thermally reversible properties. Our research interest relies on the idea of exploring, at the same time, two structures directly obtained from renewable resources and with different chemical characteristics. For this purpose, vegetal oils and/or their corresponding fatty acids, will be modified by furan derivatives via epoxidation or thiol-ene reactions (the latter also being a click chemistry mechanism), aiming at preparing macromonomers to be subsequently applied in DA thermo-reversible polymerization reactions with maleimide derivatives. Both macromonomers and polymers will be characterized by the appropriatedtechniques, highlighting the equilibrium DA/rDA, which gives to the final material a greatpotential to exhibit intelligent features with interesting applications, including some not currently found in materials produced from fossil sources. This investigation will enable to exploit furan chemistry and double click reactions in view of preparing original materials based on renewable resources, with particular emphasis on some of them obtained from Brazilian biomass. | |
