Abstract

This project for a Research Internship Abroad is part of the post-doctoral project, financed by FAPESP, "Worksongs: a dircursive and ergological approach" (# 2012/00509-8). The completion of this internship had been considered within the initial project, with the objective of widening the scope of the research, primarily about Brazilian worksongs, with worksongs from Latin America and the South of the United States. After 11 months of our regular post-Ph.D. scholarship, our studies of the existent bibliography on the subject confirm that worksongs are a universal phenomenon, present amongst all human groups which one knows about, as well as it is known that they are the verbal language, the work and the music. However, the manner in which worksongs are performed and their importance to different cultures in different times vary significantly, and that justifies the undertaking of this Research Internship Abroad, so that Brazilian worksongs can be analyzed considering also other worksongs from Latin America and the South of the United States. The chosen Research Center - Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS), of the University of Texas at Austin - is outstanding in the international scenario of Latin America studies, concentrating the world's greatest collection about that theme in its Benson Latin American Collection. It also concentrates researchers of great importance to the study of Latin American culture, among which, very preeminently, Professor Robin Moore, ethnomusicologist, who will supervise our internship.
