Abstract

The Discourse Analysis (DA) emerges in France, at the end of 1960´s, and is characterized by its critical relation with the immanent Linguistics. The discourses, thereafter, will be analyzed not just in their intern structure, but also taking into consideration the socio-historical context in which they were produced, by whom and for whom they were made. In the International Relations (IR), the concern about the language emerges with the so-called Third Debate in this academic field, between the 1980’s and 1990’s. Experts in DA show, however, that so many times, when other sciences, as the IR, deal with the Discourse Analysis, they reduce this scientific area - which has its own concepts, methodologies and historical development - in a simple analysis method. Then, the objective of this project is to deepen the knowledge in the Theory of Discourse Analysis, considering that the central part of the original project is to analyze the discourses of Brazilian manuals of English language teaching, and that this is going to be done by an International Relations student. The specific objective is to get in touch with the specialized literature and with researchers who deal directly with the textbook analysis, justifying the choice of the Centro de Linguística from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa to accomplish this research project, and the choice of the professor Fernanda Miranda Menéndez to be the supervisor.
