Abstract

The ram's sperm is very susceptible to injuries due to the processes of reproductive biotechnologies. This sensibility can be a consequence of the balance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidants instability present in seminal plasma leading to the oxidative stress. The oxidative stress can provoke DNA damage. The result of this process cause sperm vulnerability, which start the apoptotic cascade characterized by the generation of reactive oxygen species in mitochondria and nucleus. This DNA damage may be one of the causes of the male infertility. Little information is available regarding the factors that trigger the oxidative stress and DNA fragmentation in the sperm and its relationship with the ram's reproductive efficiency. The objective of this work is to measure the enzymatic concentration of antioxidants in the ram's seminal plasma and sperm, and correlate sperm enzymatic concentrations susceptibility to sperm DNA fragmentation in the ram.
