Abstract

Research results of the therapeutic properties presented by substances produced from fungi have increased the search for microorganisms and their isolation. Appropriate conditions of cultivation for the secondary metabolites production have also increased as well. This includes the polysaccharides that constitute an important class of bioactive substances, which act as biological response modifiers (antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, among others). The chemical structure knowledge of a molecule is one of the steps to understanding the biological mechanism of which it participates. So this project has a first objective that is the structure determination of the polysaccharides by traditional methods of the carbohydrate chemistry and 1H and 13C NMR - uni and bidimensional-, and GC/MS. The polysaccharides investigated will be secreted by fungi and/or extracted from the biomass. Studies have shown that sulfated polysaccharides (natural or semi synthesis) present anticoagulant and antithrombotic activities that are attributed to their sulfonate groups. Then comes the second objective of this project - some polysaccharides will be modified by chemical derivatization (sulfonation) and the anticoagulant assays will be done to verify the anticoagulant potential of the sulfonated polysaccharides.
