Abstract

Many studies indicate that smoking may be a strong risk factor for hearing loss. This way the audiologists have shown increasing interest by otoacoustic emissions (OAE) for its character measurable, objective, fast and non invasive. Objective: Improve the knowledge of cochlear physiology of children in school age, exposed to passive smoking by measuring the OAE. Method: 100 children will be invited to participate in this study, male and female who will be divided into two groups according to exposure to passive smoke: 50 school children exposed to secondhand smoke in the home environment (study group - EG) and 50 children without exposure familiar to secondhand smoke (control group - CG). The groups will be assessed by otoacoustic emissions. For the division of the groups will be held to measure cotinine (a marker of nicotine metabolism in active or passive smokers) in the urine of the school. (AU)
