Abstract

The analysis of carved capitals in the Romanesque period brings us series of theoretical and methodological issues that are important in historical research. The constituents of medieval images have been considered as active participants in the society and not just an evidence of a stylistic period, as were long considered the ornamental elements. The aim of this project is to develop a research program allowing contact with new image studies that have been developed by French historiography, especially on serial medieval images and its materiality, that has many uses and a vital presence in the place where it belongs. This methodology, still little known in Brazil, allows us to analyze the environment sacred medieval, and the importance, functions and operating modes of the ornamental elements in religious buildings in the Middle Ages.
