Abstract

Some materials formed by an organic phase dispersed in an inorganic phase exhibit new properties, which are not restricted to the sum of the properties of their separate components and are due to synergism between the phases at the molecular level. These materials are known as hybrid organic-inorganic and has received broad scientific prominence in recent decades due to its multifunctionality. As a part of the study of these materials, the surface modification of clay minerals in recent decades has become an important way to increase or create new properties in hybrid materials. The grafting method, for example, is the surface reaction between the silanol groups and the reactive groups of the organic compound (chloride, alkoxide or hydride). Thus, the focus of this project is based on obtaining hybrid organic-inorganic materials formed using the grafting method, and the inorganic phase is represented by clay montmorillonite that was functionalized (undergraduate research project funded by FAPESP, Case No. 2011/19637 -3) through covalent molecules trimethoxysilylpropylmethacrylate (TMSM) in their silanol groups. The goal of this project is to perform the next step of this work: to develop a methodology for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate groups between TMSM molecules linked on clay surface and consequent improvement of certain interesting properties such as increased mechanical strength and thermal properties of the final material.
