Abstract

This research aims to study the IV Centenary Exhibition and the 1st São Paulo World's Fair which took place in 1954. It is our hope to explore their peculiarities as memorial events of the fourth centenary of São Paulo city and their limits as international events. This research will investigate the suitability of these exhibitions to the model of those consensually accepted as international events by the specialized bibliography. Their respective international implications will be investigated too. To this end we propose a comparative analysis between the IV Centenary Exhibition and São Paulo World's Fair and the 1939 New York World's Fair. The choice of the 1939 New York World's Fair as a comparative model is due to the fact that this exhibition is recognized as an example of an international world's fair of mid-twentieth century and it happened just 15 years before São Paulo event. This choice is also due to the growing economic, political and cultural influence of the United States in Brazil, mainly after the Second World War.(AU)
