Abstract

In recent years, a great deal has been said in the media about young adults who went to public schools in high school now feeling self-excluded from universities. The basic premise commonly used by the news agencies is that this scenario is caused by students in the conditions cited above showing little interest in university courses, particularly those at public institutions. According to Neri (2009), the reasons for such behavior are related to restrictions in family income, lack of proper educational services, and lack of perception of future results, causing students to early work and, as a consequence, in a certain sense, poor educational levels. However, preliminary observations in educational institutions demonstrate that some of the students in the conditions cited above make great efforts to continue their studies and seek to go to renowned universities. Thus, this research presupposes a strong tendency for self-exclusion from the university on the part of students who went to public schools in high school and has the objective of attempting to understand the reason why, contrary to this tendency, there is still a considerable number of students who wish to enter university. In this sense, we will try to determine where the motivation for some students, who seek the services of a "Cursinho Popular", is originated. (AU)
