Abstract

Friendship bounds are believed to have a deep influence over one individual's behavior. In particular, peer pressure could be of great importance while a teenager decides whether to carry on his or her studies. Little is known about the social interactions among students on Brazilian schools, neither about if they have any impact on the choices these students make about their future. Even among international studies, most research focus on collge-students' data, consequently, there is lack of information about friendship during youth - a time of life when peer acceptance is extremely important for individuals. On this project, data about social networks among 7th and 9th grade students of São Paulo's public schools will be used in order to estimate if there is any impact of peer opinion on personal decisions about continuing education, and its magnitude. These results would fill an important gap on the study of Brazilian Educational System and also provide valuable information regarding peer effects during youth.
