Abstract

The proposed research will have for an object of study the graded reading series authored by Romao Puiggari and Arnaldo de Oliveira Barreto. The interest in analyzing the series of graded reading is justified because they constitute themselves into a specific type of school literature. This literature was widely used from the late Nineteenth and mid-twentieth in Brazilian primary schools and created to attend the graduated school model, in process of constitution. It is intended that the study of the materialness of the books that comprise the series of graded reading Puiggari-Barreto may allow the understanding of the material culture of the school represented by it, through the identification of the production process, adoption, and circulation of these cultural artifacts, its contents, and images associated with pedagogical concepts and policies for educational innovation. The research is anchored in historical studies about the material culture school (Julia, 2001; Viñao Frago, 1995; Faria Filho, 2004; Chervel, 1990 and Souza, 2007) that point to the importance of the materiality of the school as core analysis.(AU)
