Abstract

Microorganisms are able explore the most diverse habitats as they have a diverse range of metabolic capabilities, cellular structure and composition, lifestyle and ecological niches (Doolittle 1999; Arber 2000). Mobile genetic elements have largely influenced the bacterial genomic evolution as they play an important role on increasing genetic variability and promoting a genetically diverse population in a constantly changing environment. The purpose of the project described here is the investigation of elements and processes that potentially influenced the evolutionary history of phytopathogenic Xanthomonas oryzae lineages. The genomes from members of this genus present a large population of transposable elements, which likely contributed to its diversification. Our first venue of investigation aims to explore, at first in silico, the involvement of the DNA repair genes in the proliferation of IS elements in the genomes of this bacterial group. As a second venue of investigation, we are going the explore one particular event of horizontal transfer - the genomic island XODB602, exclusively found in Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola and in members of the Rhizobiales group.
