The Malpighian tubules play a key role in osmoregulation in insects. Functional genomic analysis to the Malpighian tubules in Drosophila (Diptera) revealed far more extensive functions than ion and water transport. The Malpighian tubules are involved in excretion of a broad range of organic solutes and xenobiotics. Recently, our group found and cloned from the Malpighian tubules of Zophobas morio larvae an AMP-CoA-ligase with luciferase-like activity in presence of ATP and firefly D-luciferin, a xenobiotic for this organism. We made a first transcriptional analysis using a cDNA library to clone luciferase-like enzyme. We highlight the importance of Malpighian tubules in Coleoptera physiology, the lack of molecular dates and the presence of AMP-ligases which it function is not known yet, we intend to analysis the transcriptome of Malpighian tubules and also understand better the biological function of AMP-ligases in this tissue using molecular, biochemistry and physiology techniques.
