Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate performance, intestinal health (intestinal morphometry, enzymatic activity and microbiota) and apparent metabolizable energy (EMA) in broilers fed diets with different combinations of sorghum and corn, as well as the whole grain of sorghum. To evaluate different strategies of using diets based sorghum and/or corn and soybean meal, Exp.1 will consist of the following treatments: 100% sorghum (S100%); 100% corn (M100%); 50% sorghum and 50% corn (S:M50%); sorghum in the pre-starter phase (1 to 7 days of age) and corn in the others (PS-M); corn in the pre-starter phase and sorghum in the others (PM-S). Exp. 2 will compare alterations in EMA of diets containing sorghum or corn after change in the ingredients, in metabolism trials to be conducted at seven and 16 days of age with S100%, M100%, PS-M and PM-S treatments. To evaluate the effect of using the ground or whole grain sorghum in diets, Exp.3 will consist of the following treatments: ground sorghum; whole sorghum; ground sorghum in the pre-starter phase and whole sorghum in the others; whole sorghum in the pre-starter phase and ground sorghum in the others. In Exp.4, the EMA of the diets will be determined, at the ages seven and 16 days, using the same treatments of Exp. 3. In Exp.1 and 3 broilers performance up to 42 days will be evaluated and then, at ten and 21 days of age, intestinal samples will be collected for analysis of villus morphometry and goblet cell, enzymatic activity (aminopeptidase, maltase and alkaline phosphatase) and small intestine and ceca content for Lactobacillus, Clostridium and Escherichia coli quantification by means of quantitative PCR.
