Strategies of using grain sorghum for broilers: performance, intestinal health and apparent metabolizable energy


The aim of this study is to evaluate performance, intestinal health (intestinal mucosa, enzymatic activity and microbiota) and apparent metabolizable energy (EMA) in broilers fed diets with different combinations of sorghum and corn, as well as the whole grain of sorghum. To evaluate different strategies of using diets based on sorghum (ground or whole) and/or corn, Exp.1 will consist of the following treatments: (1) 100% corn (M100%); (2) 100% ground sorghum (Sm100%); (3) 100% whole sorghum (Si100%); (4) 50% ground sorghum and 50% corn (Sm:M50%); (5) ground sorghum in the pre-starter phase (1 to 7 days of age) and corn in the others (PSm-M); (6) corn in the pre-starter phase and ground sorghum in the others (PM-Sm); (7) ground sorghum in the pre-starter phase and whole sorghum in the others (PSm-Si); (8) whole sorghum in the pre-starter phase and ground sorghum in the others (Psi-Sm); (9) whole sorghum in the pre-starter phase and corn in the others (Psi-M). Male chicks will be raised in groups of 50 birds per pen in a randomized block design with eight replications. In Exp.1, broilers performance up to 42 days will be evaluated and, at ten and 21 days of age, intestinal samples will be collected for analysis of villus morphometry, goblet cell, mitotic index, enzymatic activity (aminopeptidase, maltase and alkaline phosphatase) and small intestine and ceca content for Lactobacillus, Clostridium and Escherichia coli quantification by means of quantitative PCR. Exp. 2 will assess alterations in nutrients digestibility and EMA of diets containing sorghum or corn after change in the ingredients or form of the grain, in two metabolism trials to be conducted at seven and 16 days of age with the same treatments of Exp. 1.
