Abstract

Introduction. The consumer participation is tied to the creation of the Unified Health System (SUS) in Brazil, being one of its guidelines and exerting influence on public policies at all levels of the federation. Objective: map and discuss the scientific knowledge about the consumer participation in order to know the practical dimensions that have been highlighted in the national literature from 1988 to 2011. The data will be organized according to the representation thematic aspect and the discussion will be based on Participatory Theory of Democracy. Method: it is integrative literature review supported in six steps: establishment of the review problem, sample selection, categorization of studies, result analysis, presentation and discussion of the results and presentation of the review. Data collection. It will be used three databases, namely: BDENF (Nursing Database), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature) and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), with descriptors: "Consumer Participation", "Unified Health System" and "Health". It will be considered papers published in national journals between the years 1988 to 2011. Expected results: present to academics, health professionals, managers, trainers organs, social health organizations, among others, the scientific knowledge about consumer participation, fomenting the exercise of citizenship in the context of health.
