Abstract

Sugarcane smut is a disease caused by the fungus Sporisorium scitamineum that is responsible for major field losses to sugarcane producers in Brazil. The disease provokes diameter and development reduction of the stalks, decrease in the number of commercial tillers and sucrose levels associated with increasing in fibers, leading to sugar extraction to be lowered. In addition, an expanded appendix denoted "whip" develops, and it is responsible for producing, sheltering and spreading fungi teliospores. Due to its economic importance, resistance to sugarcane smut is a desirable agronomic trait commonly evaluated in breeding programs. Genetic studies, hystopathological and about the expression of resistance genes against the sugarcane smut are very scarce. Therefore, the main goal of this project is to provide knowledge about several aspects of this pathosystem, using an interdisciplinary approach involving Plant Anatomy and Molecular Genetics. Particularly, our objectives are to understand the fungus penetration and colonization of the meristematic sugarcane tissues, to observe the development of fungus structures in resistant and susceptible varieties, to study anatomically and ultrastructurally the whip appendix, and to locate through in situ hybridization, the expression sites of plant defense candidate genes, already identified in our laboratory
