Success rate, survival and implant failure: a cross sectional study

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to comparatively evaluate the success, survival, and failure of dental implants installed over 3 years. All the patients that received dental implants between 2010 and 2013 at the Implantology clinic of the Department of Periodontology of the School of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto of the University of São Paulo will be included in this study. The following parameters will be evaluated: age; gender; systemic disease; smoking history; the site where the implant was placed; implant diameter and height; the necessity of additional surgery; the interval between the first and the second surgery; kind of prosthesis used; bone resorption (determined by periapical radiographs). The success and survival rate of implants will be assessed based on the criteria of the Congress of Oral Implantologists Consensus Conference for Implant Success in Pisa, Italy, through the following parameters: pain; mobility; plaque index (PI); bleeding index (BI); probing depth (PD); bleeding on probing (BP); and exudate. The measurements of PI, BI, PD, and BP will be evaluated at four aspects by implant: mesial, buccal, distal, and lingual/palatine. To assess the radiographic bone loss a conventional periapical radiograph at the moment of the patient's recall. The radiographs will be digitalized and analyzed using the Image Tool software to verify and determine the resulting linear distance between the implant shoulder and bone crest (IS-BC). The average mesial and distal values will be used as the only measure for each implant. From this analysis, the implants will be divided into the following categories: bone loss < 2 mm; 2-4 mm; > 4 mm, but lower than the half of the implant body; and higher than half of the implant body. According to these criteria implants will be classified as a success, satisfactory survival, compromised survival, or failure. (AU)
