Abstract

This thesis project aims to analyze the rise of the United States in the international system through speeches and documents from 1865 to 1913. We seek to understand the role of the idea of exceptionalism, especially present in the so called "Manifest Destiny" and landmarks known as "Monroe Doctrine" and "Roosevelt Corollary". In addition, we will emphasize the narratives that relate the construction of American identity in opposition to the "Other" to be defined as the adoption of a Darwinian reading of social relations between the nations and the U.S. presidents, and the idea of a border that expands according to the need and interests of the country - in a draft order and hemispheric stability would correspond to a similar project internally. Our analysis will be conducted by theoretical considered poststructuralist, aided particularly by the works of authors such as David Campbell (1992) and Robert Walker (1993) - which put the language as an object of study in the discipline of International Relations. The research design of Lene Hansen (2006) will serve as an example for the structure of our organization for research and analyzes to be made later. (AU)
