Abstract

The hypothesis of this study is that the reduction of the dietary cation-anion balance of dairy cows modifies milk minerals and kappa-casein concentrations. The aim of this study is evaluate the effect of dietary cation-anion balance on milk and urine minerals concentration and also on milk alpha S1, alpha S2, beta e kappa-casein content in milk. Sixteen holstein cows between 100-200 days in lactation, with 25kg per day milk yield and approximated 600kg of body weight will be arranged in 4x4 Latin squares with 4 periods of 21 days and 4 treatments. They will be settled in free-stall stable, fed twice a day with individual consume control and milked twice a day. To reduce dietary cation-anion balance, cows will receive increasing quantities of ammonium sulfate according to individual treatment. Four experimental diets will be used: 1) +275 mEq/Kg diet DM; 2) +175 mEq/Kg diet DM; 3) 75 mEq/Kg diet DM; -75 mEq/Kg diet DM. The following dependent variables will be analyzed: casein subunits content, blood parameters and milk and urine minerals concentrations.
