Abstract

This project aims to study the active correspondence of the portuguese D. Luís de Almeida, 2nd Marquis of Lavradio, sent while governing the captainship of Bahia and as viceroy of Brazil, during the period of 1768 to 1779, when he lived in portuguese America. D. Luís de Almeida is seen by historiography dedicated to the portuguese-brazilian colonial period as one of the most important administrator of Brazil as a colony. To ensure the effectuation of his government and maintain his private, family and public relations, he wrote and filed hundreds of letters. The procces of filing this correspondence is known as one of the particularities of this governor, for his letters formed a file before they accomplish their function as means of communication. Therefore, this project proposes to study what we conceptualize as Lavradio Archive - its active correspondence: guarded by brazilian and portuguese institutions. An archival science study of the correspondence proposes to study the letters as an object of research, considering that exists a historicity in Lavradio file, considering the strategies that he used to choose to file certain letters. This way, the production of letters of the 2nd Marquis of Lavradio will be studied imbricated to the practice of filing, in which Lavradio defined strategies of remembering and forgetting, so that we can think the practice of governing of the modern times involved by the actions of writing and filing.
