Spectroscopic techniques based on diffuse optics are essential for determination of optical and dynamic properties in dense or turbid media, in which scattering predominates over absorption. Under these conditions, propagation of light in a medium can be described by the photon diffusion approach. Scattered light can be detected at the same plane of incidence, and its detection can provide information both on the optical properties and on the perfusion of the molecules that make up the medium. In particular, the technique is especially useful to study the properties of biological tissue, once it behaves like a dense medium in the near infrared region. Since diffuse optics is a relatively novel experimental technique, not much is known regarding the propagation of light in media with different geometries, particularly with relation to the dynamic properties of the medium. This project proposes a detailed study of light propagation in non-homogeneous dense media, with focus on obtaining the dynamic properties of the medium with a diffuse optical technique called diffusion correlation spectroscopy (DCS). In particular, this project aims to further advance and validate theoretical models in situations of particular interest for applications in biological tissue. Some examples are dense media in the presence of optical and/or dynamical inhomogeneities, and multi-layered media. Such situations represent more accurate approximations for muscle and brain structures, for example, and therefore could depict different situations encountered in problems in the fields of Biology and Medicine. The results obtained in this project have direct application in the above-cited fields, and may significantly contribute to the development of experimental techniques for monitoring the brain and muscle in the clinic. This project is a multidisciplinary project in a pioneer and innovative research field.
