Abstract

This project aims to: a) Establish a database of speech samples consisting of recordings judged as representative of the use of CA, of presence of hypernasality, and of absence of hypernasality; b) Identify nasalance values (mean and standard deviation) for the speech sample studied, c) Compare the values of nasalance across different speech samples. A total of 1200 speech samples will be provided from 15 individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP), and from 5 individuals without CLP. These subjects will be asked to read 15 sentences (12 including high pressure sound and 3 including low pressure sounds), while the nasalance and audio signals will be captured simultaneously. Audio signals will be edited and rated by 3 SLPs who will confirm with 100% agreement the desired speech characteristics. Nasalance scores for the different speech groups will be compared.
