Influence of duodenogastric reflux on tooth enamel

Abstract

In patients with duodenogastric reflux, the refluxed liquid is composed of acidic and alkaline substances that may promote structural changes in the dental substrate. Under these circumstances, this study aims to measure the action of this liquid content in the surface enamel. In order to obtain 70 fragments of bovine incisive enamel, dimensions 4x4, there will be initial microhardness analysis using a microhardness tester, for selecting the specimens and subsequently they will have half of the surface isolated with composite resin (control area) the other half will be exposed and will be submitted to erosive challenges, divided into 7 groups (G) 1: control, 2: exposition of hydrochloric acid, 3: Exposure of Ox Bile, 4: Exposure in a mixture of NaHCO3 + HCl (pH 4.5), 5: Exposure in a mixture of NaHCO3 + HCl (pH 5.0), 6: Exposure in a mixture of NaHCO3 + HCl (pH 5.5), 7 : Exposure in a mixture of HCl + NaHCO3 + Ox Bile (pH 7.0). The erosive challenge of group 2 is accomplished by exposing the fragments to a solution of HCl pH 2.0, 6 times a day for 5 days for a time to be determined, in groups 4-7 will be performed preliminary studies to define the solutions concentrations, immersion time and cycling time. The analysis will be in function of wear, surface roughness and microhardness. The data obtained from the tests of wear, surface roughness and microhardness will be analyzed for their distribution, if this is normal will be accomplished ANOVA, otherwise will be conducted nonparametric test.
